Giants, Patriots. That is all that needs to be said in order to get sports fans
jacked up in the northeastern part of the United States. Two Sundays from now marks the
rematch of one of the biggest upsets in the history of football, if not sports
period. Four years ago these two teams squared off in a match-up of David vs.
Goliath. One in which the Davidesque Giants prevailed over the previously
unbeaten, and 18-0, Patriots.
Four years may seem like ample time to overcome a simple
football game, but for New England fans, the sting from that loss still feels
as fresh as ever. Eighteen wins and zero losses. That was the Pats record going
into that fateful championship game. Only one other team had ever been in there
position: the 1972 Dolphins and they went on to claim glory as the only
undefeated team in NFL history. The Patriots were one win away from a perfect
season and their own stake in football immortality. The Giants however, could
not care less about any of this, and through a number of big plays that I’m
sure, New England fans can hardly forget (the David Tyree ball to the helmet
catch, Eli Manning eluding practically the entire Pats defensive line, and Plaxico
Burress' touchdown catch with 35 seconds remaining), they went on to win by a
score of 17-14.
So now here we are. The Pats have a chance to avenge their
painful loss on the grandest of stages or maybe the Giants will prolong their
foes suffering for at least one more year. Who knows what will happen? What I
am sure of is that sports fans alike will flock to their TV's, nacho chips and
buffalo wings in hand to see this, the most anticipated football game ever.
